I’m one of those “mind-numbed” Obama supporters the author of the Nov. 27 letter “I’m watching” wrote about. I just wanted to applaud this fine citizen’s (or was it true American’s?) promise to watch the Obama presidency and report on its progress. I just hope his observations are true and unbiased and that he doesn’t base his reports solely from Fox, Rush Limbaugh or Ann Coulter.
As the MCSD continues its march toward charter status, I urge administrators, parents and education professionals to read the fine print. According its Web site, a charter school system grants Muscogee County’s academic institutions maximum flexibility in designing their system to meet the educational needs of their students. Unfortunately, this flexibility also extends to staff hiring — in particular, teacher certification.
Preachers specialize in offering unsolicited advice. I don’t want to break that tradition! If readers want to do something to celebrate this Season of Light in a time of darkness, try doing some things that don’t cost much and are guaranteed to bring smiles:

Wow! Smelling salts! I almost underwent the vapors when your political cartoon of Friday, Nov. 21, extolled capitalism and the free market.
Wow, so now we are being promised a new deal, a chicken for every pot, or two televisions for every household! The truth is the program sold to the American people is actually the same program repackaged over and over again. The only change we will surely get is a return to the Clinton era! Democrats always sell it during times of distress, and always package it as our salvation from the evil rich people. I always hear the same promises, but the only changes I foresee are Democrats feeding at the public trough and everyone’s taxes going up! Of course it never affects them or their friends, because they always raise their own salaries. I remember the great Clean Air Act, which forced many of our industries offshore and tried to follow up with a Clean Water Act which would have removed our remaining industry. Each time they sell these stupid ideas there are more takers because job losses force more Americans to rely on federal programs.
For two years, we found ourselves watching debates, reading page after page of positions on health care, the two wars, immigration, the economy (still spiraling downward), and criteria for a president of the United States (which briefly dealt with race).
On Nov. 17, I had the honor of taking my spouse to the celebration for veterans at Golden Coral. As a U.S. Army veteran with over 20 years in the Infantry, I was very impressed and give my thanks to all involved.
For the first time in my life, I am ashamed to be an American. Decades of “dumbing down” and brainwashing in the public school system have brought the USA to the lowest point in our history. I thought we had reached that point when “Slick Willie” Clinton was elected, but I see now that the standards can go even lower.
America salutes California Congressman Duncan Hunter for sponsoring Red Ribbon Week. Every concerned parent applauds Congressman Hunter’s decades-long crusade to keep children and their still-growing brains and tender young lungs away from marijuana.
Regardless of their political differences, all Americans can celebrate the historic election of the first African-American president. Barack Obama, as president of us all, should be given every opportunity to succeed.
I was born in 1940 in a small middle Georgia town. Since that time, I have lived through one world war, the Korean war, Vietnam war and the Cold war, to name a few. My great-grandfather fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. My own military career began after the close of the Koran conflict and at the beginning of the Cold War and the Vietnam war. I joined the U.S. Army in 1957 and received my discharge in 1965.
President-elect Barack Obama is not a communist. He is not a Marxist. He is not a socialist. He is not anti-American. He is not a terrorist. He is not dangerous. He is not going to take away your precious guns. The right-wingers in this country are still calling him these names and harping on these stupid issues. They are like rabid animals with crazy talk radio leading the pack.
Mr. Holden, you can protest all you want about your lack of bias in favor of Barack Obama in your paper, but we know better. I have personally written two letters during the heat of the campaign, protesting/highlighting obvious bias in your news coverage, but alas, they never found the light of day in publication. They were critical, but certainly not offensive! Other letters were somehow delayed till their relavency was outdated or lost! Indeed, the ones not published were sent directly to Dusty Nix. I am copying him on this one! If you would like copies, I will oblige.
An article in Sunday’s paper disturbs me greatly. I’m not familiar with Joe Galloway and don’t care to be. His rantings are way over the top and not based in fact. He blames everything on the Republicans when in fact many of our problems are from Dems. The entire Congress and government have had a hand in this debacle.
We have been subscribers to your paper since 1973. My father wrote for your paper in the ‘60s and was proud of it.
My father and I are appalled at the decision of Chuck Leonard to make a racist comment on a radio station instead of during the TV morning show while seated next to African Americans Cheryl Renee and Bruce Lee.
During the recent presidential election cycle, I heard parents of college students speaking on several television news shows. These parents were amazed that their children were voting for Barack Obama. They were shocked because Barack Obama did not share the conservative values the students were exposed to as they were growing up.
